WICKED EASY DIY SHAMROCK CLAY CHARMS
An easy step by step guide for St. Patrick’s Day!
St. Patricks Day is right around the corner and with that being said it’s time for the clam fam to get down to business with the color green! This cute beginner polymer clay project will be perfect for adding color to your St. Patrick Day festivities! Make them as a gift (for people… or leprechauns) or to accessorize your holiday outfit.
Growing up, st Patrick’s day was a day for the curiosity of magic. My sister and I would wake up and run down stairs to see the chaos leprechauns would leave behind around the kitchen. Those creative fellows always left us golden wrapped chocolates, crafty green charms of sorts, and a mess of glitter all around. Although I haven’t caught a leprechaun yet, their magic continues on each year- giving me that crafty inspiration. -Dani
MATERIALS
- Polymer Clay
- Toothpicks
- Glitter/embellishments (optional)
- Clear Adhesive Sealant
- Baking tray & Oven
- Choose your colors/embellishments for your shamrocks. You can choose as many or as little as you’d like. We went with the classic green. Begin softening each color by rolling them into little logs.
2. Take your log and divide it up into little “pedals”. You’ll need at least 6 pedals for one shamrock. roll your pedals into little oval shapes.
3. Take two ovals and push them together, carefully forming a heart. Do this step for each oval until you have 3 hearts.
4. Add the 3 hearts together forming your shamrock. It doesn’t matter how they’re placed, wild shamrocks have no method to their magic.
5. After you have formed your shamrock, go ahead and add a little stem on the bottom. Tada! You have your clover. Now you can sprinkle your glam and glitz. Don’t forget to poke little holes into your pieces with a toothpick before baking!!
6. Once you’ve created as many shamrocks as you’d like, line them on a baking sheet. The time and temperature will vary depending on your brand of clay. Check the package on your clay for baking instructions. We baked ours at 275 for 20 minutes.
(A safe rule of thumb that we’ve learned is 15 minutes for ever ¼ inch of thickness)
7. When your charms have baked and cooled spray them with a clear sealant to add shine. *If you don’t have any craft gloss, we have used a top coat nail polish before, with the same results. Wait about 15 minutes for the gloss to dry before adding jewelry findings and creating whatever pieces you’d like! we went with a charm bracelet, shamrocks are lucky charms after all, and a cute set of earrings.
That’s it! Now you have your clam glam for St. Patricks day. You’re welclam.
